Smith, A. (2014). 100 sideways miles. New York, NY: Simon & Schuster. Finn's story begins at the start of his senior year of high school. He and his best friend Cade are starters on the school baseball team. Cade is the star pitcher and arguably the most popular kid on campus, and Finn is his best friend and sidekick, which is just fine with him. Finn prefers to be in a position that does not invite costly mistakes. A costly mistake changed his life at a young age. Finn has epilepsy. A freak falling horse accident killed his mother and very nearly killed him as a child. Becoming independent is trickier for Finn than other kids his age.

But Finn is slowly able to navigate the challenges of his condition and, with support from Cade and his new girlfriend, he slowly manages to break free of his childhood bonds, physical and psychological, and in the process of rescuing another, saves himself.
